Title: The First International Fanworks Day!
Post by: Elf on February 15, 2015, 09:22:19 PM
So, I found out today is apparently International Fanworks Day (http://www.themarysue.com/international-fanworks-day/), and the first one to Boot.

Even though it's been a while since I've written fic, being busy with LUHC (http://www.jukepop.com/home/read/533), but since I was fourteen I was writing fanfic.  Oh man, my first fanfic was sort of painful.  The Real Adventures of Jonny Quest that had I created a "romantic interest" for Jonny because I had a giant crush on him at the time and that the cool redheaded girl who was the daughter of the most awesome badass white haired red shirt wearer (as much as I adore Archer, Race Bannon was rocking the white haired red wearer badass first) around had a thing for the adopted Indian boy.

It was bad and never made it on line.  Thank goodness so no one can look at my shame and laugh.  Because it really is a shameful display.

Anyway, my first real attempt at fanfic came when I was 15 and finally got access to a computer and the internet. Hilariously enough, the story was written before the first episode of one of the shows involved in the crossover had even aired.  Angel/Highlander Crossover (https://www.fanfiction.net/s/20714/1/Angel-Highlander-Crossover) was written in 1999.  I long lost the link to the original site that hosted it, so I just posted from when I published it on FFNet after someone introduced me to that site.

I was fifteen when I wrote that story, and it's sort of hilarious to go back and read it.  Especially since it was written a good two months before Angel premiered in 1999 on what was then the WB network.  I was infatuated with both Angel and Duncan MacLeod at the time, and almost anything can crossover with Highlander because the mythology is so open and really not there, which is something for another time.

It was also practice for me for writing, getting my "voice" down and characterization.  I wrote a lot of fanfic.

Hell, I called Snape being in love with Lily Potter (https://www.fanfiction.net/s/929162/1/Green-Eyes) years before the last HP book was written.

And for the most part, fanfic has been a really positive experience for me.  I've built relationships that I would never have without it.  Made friends that I'm still in touch with to this day.  Hell, two of my bridesmaids at my wedding were friends I met through fanfic and fandom.

There's a lot of love that goes into fanworks be it artwork or writing, and its sort of awesome to see it get attention.

I've rambled enough I suppose, but I thought I'd share this because its love.

So what's the big hubbub about today exactly? I get that it's for fan works but, do sites give awards or something like that? A fan day is cool and all but I get the feeling it's not like free comic book day.

Literally nothing about awards in the link.

The "award" is the celebration.  There no prizes, but its just nice to think that our efforts are actually being noticed.

I'm afraid my idea will be more laughed at than noticed.

I had thought perhaps certain sites or whatnot would run contests or such. Kinda like bl did for awhile. Or have some pseudo award thing like king of the web. Again neat that we're having recognition and stuff, I just thought it was more than that because you made it sound bigger than that.

Current BL contest is kind of a joke tho.

I think it would be difficult to have awards spread over the entire genre of fanfiction. It's too spread-out and, further, much of it is technically probably illegal....

As for me, I've only ever actually written one fanfic, and it only got as far as two chapters, so I can't really comment that much. I do like reading fanfic, although the amount of stuff that actually interests me is fairly minimal now, and I can't easily comment on most of it due to being banned from BL....

You miss out if you don't branch into Sakura-neutral fanfics :p

Well, it depends. I can read some "Sakura-neutral" fanfics, the problem is that a lot of them are post-UBW, and I find the UBW ending infuriating if Sakura is just forgotten about (and post-Fate isn't a lot better, especially if Shirou is being a "hero"). As a result, I have absolutely no interest in the characters involved.

Plus, a lot of the stuff is just OC-filled stuff or cross-overs, neither of which generally interest me. If Sakura has a big role in a cross-over story it might, but in general my lack of knowledge of the other fandom makes the story of limited interest.

More and more of them are also not exactly post-FSN, given there are more and more spin-offs.

That's true also, but those aren't of interest to me either, since I've never read most of the spin-offs. Zero, yeah, but Zero fics that don't involve Sakura I have absolutely no interest in. I don't like grimdark, in general, and anything from Zero that ignores Sakura is likely to be grimdark.

Advice, read spin-offs, they are quite good even with different authorship.

Read Gilgamesh route of CCC since it has some Sakura  to ease transition.

I want to see the Sakura route.

And that route has enough Sakura as it is.

It doesn't have her ending, though. Her ending looks nice, from what I can tell of it.

So Gilgamesh one. He saves Extra MC from deletion.

Yeah, but the Gil one doesn't have Sakura....

I don't recall Sakura NPC dying or something.

Trust me, there is more Sakura in non-Sakura routes than in HF.
