If she ought to have been grateful, what instead the assistant professor found on her face was an uneasy scowl with no joy for his actions.

"I would have been fine," she said. "Take better care of yourself."

Lawrence soon found himself pulled up in defiance of his body's fragility, and his crippled arm hoisted around the Headmaster's shoulder, the better to support him to his feet.

Turning her face from the plea to play into his plan, the Headmaster only followed the chaotic confluence between the vampire and the re-emerged, transformed squirrelgirl, and at once she stomped her foot.

A telepathic warning sounded in Nanako's head for only the briefest interlude - 'If you don't want to be caught, quit this clash now.'

Every stone under the entire street reverbated once again, as did her remaining warriors of stone, and in an instant an avalanche of rubble, steel, cement, glass and rock thundered free into the sky. The numerous debris swirled around the flames led by the floating familiars and hurled themselves in a crushing rain to surround it like a dome, piece after piece streaming in to form walls on every side.

And then, first in this exchange, her expression slipped into clear scorn, and a snarl tumbled from between her gritted teeth. If his ear was sharp enough, perhaps he could tell. The Headmaster had no intention, none whatsoever, of humoring him in the way he desired. This was no place for the mania of a fool who delighted in stoking the flames of death.

And so, with a minute flick of her wrist hidden behind Lawrence's body, in the instant the vampire swung his leg, the bars and meshes of iron he had so easily discarded split in the air, and double their number threw themselves in impaling arcs from his flanks, so quick the air was rent in their wake, and dozens of sharp pellets torn loose from the buildings and road too let loose sonic screams in hurling themselves at the hunter.

Lubei

Lubei's jaw felt so tight he feared it would break, as he seized her wrists, dragging her hands away. He didn't think it was panic, but a churning premonition took hold in his stomach. "Stop! Hurting yourself won't help anything, do you even understand what you're trying to repent for?!" He called out, trying to reach Ivanna through the torment.

The young demon lord had seen and heard various preposterous things in his short time in the Nexus, and almost every time it seemed as they manifested to threaten him to say or do something he would regret. A cold trepidation accompanied every action he took in response, whether they felt just or misguided in hindsight. This time, he forgot all about whether he had the right to make his feelings known, or to aid another, or care for things such as justice. Who had set alight this poison in the seraph's mind? He would not tolerate that Ivanna suffer without clarity or hope.

Lubei squezed her hands. "Ignorance is not a crime, but if you have done anything worthy of punishment, then don't shut your eyes and ears to the evidence out of fear, or you will never learn how to make it better. I don't know if you were wrong, but I understand - you have done your best."

He reeled back at the sudden outburst of radiance, startled by an instinctive fear. If not for the trajectory of his mind, if not for the fact that this seraph had previously beseeched that he call her friend, his reasoning might have agreed with the reaction of his demonic body, but Lubei Sang's mind was perfectly clear, and entirely capable of recognizing her pain.

What kept him in silence for a moment was awkwardness over something else. She couldn't know, but the last thing she said made him squeeze down a fierce cringe. That method sounded exactly like something that he, or rather, his former self, would have done. But if he kept feeling sorry, that would defeat the point here. "I am sorry," he said. The demon lord shook his head, and letting slip the tension from his legs, placed himself on eye level with her.

"I won't say I understand the essence of your loss, but I want you to hear well these words. Even if you had no compass from on high, you still have those who believe. I have met your devoted ones, and their efforts are no less valid for this. I have said I would be your ally for as long as this aid is returned, and I don't intend on making another mistake by taking this promise back. And if you are ignorant, then you have the ability to learn. You are not mortal, be you rogue, wanderer, exile, renegade, or whatever else you consider yourself. You have infinite time to walk towards virtue and to find your own merits."

Ah, so everything until now had been playing. The rumbling of her soldiers seemed small and distant as the vampire's figure grew taut with bloodthirst. While it wove itself in a figure of predatory chivalry, her human heart thumped once in its chest like it meant to escape. Every mortal fiber in her being ought to be warning her to not look away if she wanted to live, in disregard of the deeper ego that assured her invincibility.

Still, the corners of her eyes wrinkled at Lawrence's manners, away from this. What... was he doing?

And in that instant, the vampire slipped her senses completely. She slammed her foot down, and spears of steel rushed forth from the ground in a piercing net, but she was already open. This attack, she could not avoid. Was this his answer to her demand?

In this life as a demon, the person beneath the name of Lubei Sang was quite familiar with loathing, though he would scarce admit it. Maybe it was condescending to presume that these circumstances, or his feelings, made him able to understand even a sliver of the angel's. But noise strained her voice, mockery and doubt tearing it apart, leaving the only conclusion that she could express for the feelings in her heart as a deeply unresolved, unsatisfying sermon.

"Ivanna," he said, haltingly. Lubei thought that through the clawing of impossible questions, he could also hear that familiar refrain. Do I even deserve to have an opinion? The plea to be told what is right without gradients nor shades, so you know what to follow. Pitiful and unbearable.

So instead, the demon asked, "Haven't you already achieved many things outside your task? What was your guide towards them, if not what is right?"

His brow knit in cavernous depth. Lubei's eyes were filled with a churning frustration at the confession, setting off pinpricks in his throat, and a spill of familiar feelings in his chest. He didn't like the premise presented to him, the fear of it in Ivanna, and he thought in an instant to seize her to her feet and swear that he would not judge her. But another part of him held back. What if the idea or deed in question was as severe as she made it out to be, more severe than anything he would ever dare to support? How could promise such shallow support and disappoint her?

Even asking himself this made Lubei Sang scoff. He was no one to consider judging others, and yet... he cared enough to be unsettled at the thought that lack of discernment in those who had found a place in his mind would lead them to wrongful punishment. The demon lord could admit as much, and it was in tune with that reasoning that he heard the shrill call of his unbanishable companion. 'To know you are guilty does not exclude one from recognizing the errors of others.'

This time, he did not feel hurt from the advice. Lubei flattered his face, and said to Ivanna:

"Only you can judge whether something that you have kept to your own mind, and which you have kept from shaping your actions, is wrong. Good intentions may sometimes produce terrible results, and even without malice, someone must bear the karma. Can good results not come even from a mind that thinks of bad intentions, if what they do of their own will is not?"

Lubei stared and waited, because whatever was ailing Ivanna was hers to tell, not his to forcibly extract. He had done his part and brought them to, he hoped, privacy. So why wasn't she saying anything? The silence between two stretching into discomfort, Lubei found the bench she had made in his eyesight, and sat. He could still feel her gaze on him, and it was distressingly warm even as he was surrounded by ice.

"You had something to say." He inclined his head towards the seraph, but evaded her own loaded stare. The demon lord didn't need to read the turbulence behind her face to feel it in her aborted words, in the void that her confident dialogue ought to fill. Lubei continued, "What do you expect from me if you won't, Ivanna? Tell me what you need, if it is within my abilities to... aid. I am here right now to hear it."

This close, the folds of the black cloak fluttered before the cascade of impacts like snakes caught by a hurricane, but the woman that wore it did not sway as if affected. Her form was outmatched against these forces, but her mind refused to allow even a blink to pass through and give away a weakness. Flung familiars tumbled past her, and without a sweat or missing a beat the Headmaster threw her palms forward. The street beneath all of them rolled like a wave, stone and cement bursting like crests of seafoam into the melee, separating the squirrelgirl from the barrage of the assistant professor and attempting to bury the bloodsucker.

As winds of combat blew a gap in the smoke, the headmaster could see the vampire clearly, and he would have been able to see her lips utter something without sound. A split second was all he got, as her soldiers reared up once more to resume their purpose. Your proof?

His eyes widened, transparent in sheer discomfort. Lubei's shoulders tensed, as though he was about to jolt forward to shield her smaller figure from prying eyes or unseen threats, but his arm seized in doubt in the space between them.

"I am not well-acquainted with anywhere outside your influence entirely," he said. If the demon didn't seem to serious, he would appear almost embarassed about it, eyes creased and pointed away so they would not meet hers for this admission. But shaking his head, he slammed his door behind him and crouched to Ivanna's side. Before she knew it, and before Lubei had any explanation to offer in his own expression, he was picking her up in his arms and rising, stalking away with light steps.

"I'll manage something."

It didn't take him long to find the nearest window and click it open before jumping away into the frigid air. As quickly as they rose, he landed on the brick streets behind the palace, veiled from the gusts of the day and the prying days of the seraph's populace. Checking for anyone around them, he headed away from the main streets without ever setting Ivanna down, trotting with inhuman speed. If any of her personal guard saw them, he did not stop, confident that they would not stop Ivanna.

Just like that, the scenery rushed and slipped away before Ivanna truly had any idea what her fixated friend wanted. Less used streets gave way to well-worn but solid roads, those roads to dirt paths, and the dirt paths to a sea of pine and spruce. Bringing her to the dead of the forest closest to her domain, he lept behind an ancient outcropping, and before he set her down, clenched his fist.

A dome of ice closed itself behind the terrain, isolating them from the outside. Lubei let out a breath he had long been holding and allowed her to sit, staring expectantly.

The beastly fighter was fast, almost too fast to see properly. She couldn't keep track of the squirrelgirl at the same, and upon seeing her willingness to fight him away from here, the Headmaster almost instantly took her attention away and focused solely on his rabid advance. Either directly manipulated or given autonomy by her will, these soldiers of shattered architecture were rough, but by no means fell completely behind in speed. She could make smaller things fly as fast as bullets, pierce the air like artillery, but she did not need that here yet.

A handful of her familiars stood in his way as a phalanx, and in the same instant, another row jumped over them, closing the route to their master through the air, lunging with their strengthened fists at the sorcerer.

"If I did, I would not share with such a rude visitor," she retorted, hand outstretched like a conductor.

"I'm a strict educator, being stringent with credit is second nature." She chuckled drily. As long as he stood without a care of being a threat to the campus' occupants, nothing he would do could draw genuine mirth from that dubious, icy face. "And so far you've not persuaded me to give you an alternative. You can enjoy whatever you wish, but I have no reason to be complicit in your lack of consideration for your surroundings, or to overlook my duties on your account. We will fight if you do not retreat, but it will not be for enjoyment, and I will not weep if my means upset you."

She snapped her fingers, and with a series of booms around them, revealed that these means included massive featureless warriors reshaped from the rent cement, bent steel and cracked brick left in his wake, and yet more drawn from beneath them.

Lubei mannerisms weren't flexible enough to bring across the entirety of his confusion. What did she have on her mind that she felt unsafe in the heart of her territory? Could anyone who was neither a guest nor blazingly loyal to her even enter these halls at will? He couldn't sense anything so strange or so unholy near.

"Where then?" He asked. The demon cast his eyes left and right over the otherwise vacant hall, then back to his door. Without thought, he extended an open hand to Ivanna in urgent invitation.

The Headmaster

In the face of it, the hooded woman appeared as unflappable as ever as she took a mere two steps closer to the bestial man. But he couldn't miss the way her fingers twitched between the folds of her cloak, and how her brows were creased with an old severity when she tilted her head his way as if half-hearted greeting.

"Yes, you may," she said, clicking her teeth. More tired than wrathful, almost indulgently so, her voice did not instantly snap the thread of tension between them. "You are providing a terrible example for my students, and if that was all, I would simply invite you to leave. But either you are not cognizant of the harm you're causing, or you do not care, and that is not tolerable. Perhaps you are ignorant that there are better places to break yourself and others."

She chanced a look at the other person, engaged in battle with the fiend, withering with disappointment. The stones and bricks all around them vibrated in warning when she returned her eyes to the first perpetrator.

A mental call rang in Lawrence's head, a telepathic message through magecraft. 'Hold until it seems I cannot easily deal with this. If otherwise, go secure the area, professor.'

No time at all passed from the arrival of the haggard student, to her expression twinging with bitterness under the hood. Rather than answer Lawrence immediately, she had crossed the distance to the messenger and steadied him by the shoulder. "I understand, and I'll go right away," she said, squeezing lightly. "You've done well, so go take care of your injuries and keep safe."

With a sweep of her cloak, she nodded apologetically to her guests, and flew the promised recommendation in Kore's hands. She paused severely only at the sight of Lawrence. "I'm afraid we must cut this close. Please take your leave, and I will see you later. You follow me, professor."

She did not walk, but strode to the door of the study of the study, and as she slammed half of it open, what gazed from the other side was not the interior of the building, but a scene of battle.
