Title: 2014 FIFA World Cup
Post by: Cherry Lover on June 16, 2014, 10:19:36 PM
So, what do you guys think of the World Cup so far?

England seem to be in a bit of trouble, you would rather not lose your first match, but I think we played reasonably well and were somewhat unlucky. Based on Uruguay's last match I think we'll beat them, and I think we probably should be able to beat Costa Rica as well, so I think we'll go through.

Spain, on the other hand, are in real trouble, IMO. They've pretty much got to win their remaining two games now (and Chile are a pretty good team), if they lose they're out, and if they draw they're in big trouble (because their goal difference is so bad). And, if they do make it through, they're almost certain to play Brazil in the second round....

6th fastest goal in World Cup history just pulled off by an American. 32 seconds into the game he pretty much walked that thing into Ghana's net

Yeah, that was pretty impressive. I think you'll win this game now. But, you've still got to play Germany and Portugal yet....

HAHAHA SWEET SWEET REVENGE.

2-1 US victory. First first match win for the US since the 1930's. Fucking hell this Group of Death just gave the US a gasp at struggling into the cup proper.

Well, obviously winning is better than losing, but I'm pretty sure Ghana are the weakest of the other three teams in the group. I don't see you beating Germany (although it's not impossible), so it'll probably come down to the game between you and Portugal (although a draw will probably be enough, since Portugal got hammered by the Germans).

I decided to follow USA in this World Cup. I won't be surprised if Portugal gets owned by Eagleland.

And I will laugh if USA lasts longer in the Cup than England.

It's not impossible. The US realistically only needs a draw anyway (if they draw, then they only need to avoid a 5-goal swing in the final game, and the Germans will already be guaranteed to finish top, assuming they beat Ghana, so they won't give a shit), and I can easily see them managing that.

Well, regardless, England certainly lasted longer than Poland....

Now, now, it's true. What really matters is...

That our team is sucking harder than last time, and all of your teams have better chances than ours. :V
And if they don't beat Honduras...oh, boy.

Well, I wouldn't really assume the US is going to outlast us, but even if it does I suspect it has more to do with the draw than the relative quality of the two teams.

Yeah, you've got to beat Honduras or you are essentially out. The French looked pretty good, though, and you're likely to need to beat them as well....

Hahaha

England got a relatively easy group compared to the US. There is no debate about that.

Erm, what?

There's plenty of debate about that. I would say that Costa Rica are a better team than Ghana, and Portugal haven't been that great recently. Plus, Uruguay have a significant advantage with the World Cup being held in Brazil.

Admittedly, with the way the teams are playing (Uruguay are actually pretty poor, whereas Germany were quite impressive) you might have more of a case, but looking at the original draw I would have probably preferred the US's group to ours.

Yeah, that's definitely true. But, regardless of the relative group strengths, Ghana are most certainly not as good a team as Italy. Further, we've played what seems to be the hardest team in our group, whilst the US played what is probably the easiest. So, I wouldn't be so sure that the US are going to be in a better position than us at the end of the group stage....

Erm, did you read my post?

What I said was that the US has played their easiest game already (against Ghana, i.e. the country that is notably not Portugal or Germany), whereas we've played what is probably our hardest game.

Title: Re: 2014 FIFA World Cup
Post by: Cherry Lover on June 19, 2014, 11:40:48 PM
Well, that's England pretty much done for. We can still go through in theory, but we're relying on Italy winning both of their last two games (the last of which they'll only need a draw for) as well as us beating Costa Rica.

Honestly, I think we were a bit unlucky, although our defence was pretty poor. The Uruguayan captain should have been sent off for a second yellow about 30 minutes into the game, and I think we played well enough to get at least a draw.

I now want the USA to pound the Germans into dust come next game; if only because that means Ghana has more chances of getting through. >:3

I think it's still true, honestly. Even with that draw, I'd still back Ghana and the USA to be the two teams that go out.

I guess we'll see tomorrow night, though. If the US can get a point against Portugal, then you're in a very strong position.

Well, whilst it can't be good for morale to lose that heavily, it's still in their own hands. If Portugal win their remaining two games, they'll qualify. The only way the hammering by the Germans matters is if they draw with the USA.

That's not really something we can say. I think we could have beaten Ghana, and at least drawn with if not beaten Portugal (especially with them playing like that), but we'll never know.

Erm, actually, we've not played them yet. And, they seem to be playing exceptionally well right now. I'd be surprised if they don't make at least the Quarter Finals, and they could possibly even go further.

And, honestly, we were unlucky against Italy, and to some extent also Uruguay. Plus, both Italy and Uruguay were reasonably good against us, and terrible against Costa Rica.

No, not quite. A win put the US through outright. A draw means they either need a point against Germany, or to hope that the result between Ghana and Portugal goes their way (basically, the US goes through if it's a draw, Ghana wins by 1 goal and the US only loses by one goal or Portugal win without overturning a massive goal difference deficit).

The Portugal-Ghana game is likely either going to be a tie or a Portuguese win. The US is still going to be able to go through if they don't lose too badly and Ghana doesn't stomp. Portugal has basically an impossible situation here for them to advance.

I'm not sure why you think Ghana obviously can't beat Portugal, given that Ghana drew with the Germans whilst Portugal got stomped by them.

And, the US only goes through with a loss and a Ghanian win if you only lose by one goal, Ghana only wins by one goal and Ghana doesn't score more goals than you do. In that case, you'd go through on the head-to-head result. So, whilst it isn't certain that you'd go out if Ghana wins and you lose, there's a good chance.

On the other hand, a draw does put you (and Germany) through, and it is extremely unlikely that Portugal will catch up the goal difference, so anything other than a Ghanian win does pretty much mean you're through, yes.

On a different note, did you see what Suarez did? Surely he's going to get a long ban for that (especially since it's the third time he's bitten someone). I suspect Liverpool fans will be hoping it's solely an international ban and not a ban from all competitions.

2) I like USA. I don't think unconditional alliance with them is beneficial for my country, but I like their culture and literature.

3) Does it even matter?

Anyway, it's good both teams qualified since I like Germans and USA alike. I don't like German language because I find it too hard to learn properly, but I like German culture.

Well, to be fair, a) I'm sure there are English players still in other teams and b) I suspect a large chunk of the players still left in the competition play in England.
