Title: The KAIZAverse
Post by: KAIZA on May 04, 2013, 05:19:14 AM
Welcome everyone. KAIZA here, and welcome to this little workshop of mine.
Here, you'll witness my struggles as I attempt to learn to draw as good as every other artist I've seen!

This will be my general art thread, though I will post fanart to time to time. This is mainly because I do struggle a bit with fanart (they never look right ;_; ); plus, when practicing, I just draw whatever comes to mind.

Well, enough talk, let's start with some oldies! (Excuse the quality, most of these were drawn on the go while in high school)

My humble beginning. My first two characters, Quincey and Eliza Harker. This is from...about four/five years ago, I think?

Same characters, a few months later.

And same characters, plus a few others, in a poorly colored sketch, two years later.

And here's a collection of random sketches related to this story idea. Only thing missing is the antagonists, but...that's for another day.

Yeah, this is just the beginning. Next few posts will be like a trip through memory lane for me!
Old sketches galore!

Second batch, go!

These are mostly random sketches I did through the years. High school years, that is. ^^
Yeah...there's still more to come.

Now, from my random doodling in high-school came this sketch:

Yeah, just that. But, a couple of years later, from that one sketch, a little idea was born. Those of you who were in the old forum or read one of my blog posts, will remember this idea.

Project CYBERSOUL.

Yes, from that one doodle of a girl with a gun (incomplete, might I add, I wanted her fighting soldiers) a completely unrelated idea was born. Of course, I started doodling more about it as time went by.

It went from this:

To this:

Man...this is, by far, the idea I have developed the most. From beginning, to end, to the backstories, to the setting...sure, there's still some work I have to do with it, plus...I haven't even made one game so far, but...I can dream, right?

Aside from those two ideas...here's a collection of doodles of characters from other ideas I've had (this one for either novels or VNs)!

Robot girl Muse.

Intel, since I can't think of a better name, the spunky Cyber Girl.

And Kagutsuchi of the Flames (Hi no Kagutsuchi), an antagonist from a VN idea I have.

Also, I apologize for the quality:
Chibi version of the heroines of some of my ideas. You can see Muse down there!

As for this thing:
Yeah, I blatantly copied the Neco idea from TYPE-MOON. Kinda. Sorta. OK, I give up.

And now for some fanart!

So, I'm a Mega Man fan. Yeah...

First fanart with a tablet. Ciel's new redesign.

Kohaku doodle.

First attempt to draw V/V. Fail at wings.

One of my first fanarts, a sketch of the Tohsaka sisters.

My first attempt at drawing Archer. With no reference for his clothes, had to get creative.

Following a request, ShirouXAyaka fanart.

My attempt at a Battle Network version of Ciel from Mega Man Zero

And a quickie sketch of Shiki I was requested.

Now, for the low quality camera shots...

I think I like doodling obscure characters.

Shirou, your hair, why?!

Ryougi Shiki, with Air Man in the corner.

IT JUST WORKS!

...
I think that's it for now.

And so...finally. My most recent sketches, done using my recently-bought tablet...

Random sketches, mostly practice on how to do lineart.

Same. I still don't know how to do angel wings. Yes, she was originally an angel.

And my recent attempt at coloring/shading. I failed. orz

This one, so far, is the best tablet sketch I've made so far. It's of one of the heroines of one of my stories. The top one in the chibi sketch above. Funnily, was listening to Another Heaven while sketching it. Maybe its influence can be seen in the final product.

Also, a WIP:
Yeah...the legs are being redrawn. That pose looks awkward...

Oh well. I still have a lot to learn, folks. This will be a long and bitter journey...but one day, my dreams will come true!! One day!!
But, for now, that's as far as I go.
See ya!

Yeah, I agree with Lantz, these are pretty good.

I do particularly like the Rin/Sakura one, although I think you need to either shrink Rin's breasts a bit or expand Sakura's (most likely the first)....

Aww, thanks guys. ^^
I still have a lot to improve on (anatomy, poses, originality, colors, the works). However, thanks for the support.

Also, new image. This one has spoilers for Fire Emblem Awakening (seriously, that game is awesome and addictive):

Also, that drawing's extremely well done. Keep up the good work!  ;D

Anyhow, two more sketches. First one people probably won't recognize, second one if you know Tsukihime.

Agreed about the hair, it's so goddamn retarded to draw, it's spiky, but the spikes are small enough to give the illusion of flatness.
Overall, you've got a really good understanding about proportions and facial structures (it's 1000 times better than anything I've tried). The only complaint would be that your guys and girls have the same faces, but I guess that depends on the character...
The main problem with wings is that you're using the wrong ones. Angel ones are giant one piece bird like ones, but you've been drawing insect wings...

Yeah...six face syndrome is something that has plagued me these last couple of years. (|||=_=)
Been trying to counter that, though I haven't been exactly successful.

As for the wings...I know those are insect wings. I drew those instead of the normal ones after they ended up looking ugly. I don't know, when it comes to those, I guess it's more of a hit and miss.

Well, in any case, I just started drawing a Fire Emblem: Awakening comic! You can find it here if you're interested. (http://darksidemoon.net/SMF_forum/index.php/topic,70.new.html#new) At the moment, only chapter 1 is up, but when I get the time, I'll start working on the next chapters.
Don't worry, it'll only be about four chapters long, tops. Still, this is my first attempt at a larger project, so, I guess some critique would be appreciated. :3

Well, I don't have the foggiest clue what is going on there, but it is pretty well drawn, although the drawing (especially faces) is quite simplistic (I assume that is intentional).

Yeah...some familiarity with the characters would help a bit...the no dialogue thing doesn't help either.
I'll try to explain as best I can:
Anna (a merchant who loves making money) finds a strange magic tome in a chest. Seeing how it was in a treasure chest, she concludes it must be worth some money. So she goes back to the barracks to see if she can sell it to her teammates. She finds Lucina (Main character Chrom's daughter from the future) and Miriel (a mage), and tries to sell them the book. They don't fall for it, though Miriel seems to recognize the tome. Not taking no for an answer, Anna goes ahead and tries to up her sales pitch by doing a demonstration. Finally realizing what the book actually is, Miriel tries to stop her, but is just too late, as the tome's spell hits Lucina, and turns her into a child.

More plot coming in chapter 2.
As for the artstyle...it is intentional in some places, but yeah, my art leans towards the simplistic. Hence why I practice and keep trying to improve.

Overall it's interesting, though like Mike said, If you hadn't explained the story, I wouldn't have any idea about what's going on...besides the basics like a girl finds magic book and turns some poor mook who's probably her friend into a child, etc

Try shading, I think it'll help, even if you're going for simplistic....

Faces are a bit sharp and angular at times, like with the witch.
I also think you should try squashing their faces a little, I find that sharp long faces are usually male characters, whilst softer smaller faces work for girls

Besides that...TEACH ME about drawing body postures! They're soo hard, but you're soo good at it!

Yeah...the no dialogue has been a hit-and-miss so far...and this is just the intro. Later on I'll have to deal with stuff that kinda worked better with narration and dialogue. Still, I do want to make this work. I might add dialogue in the future, after I finish it; to see if in the end the whole thing worked out, and because even though I have the whole idea planned out, I'm drawing this as I go.

Since shading I still need practice (along with coloring), we'll see how it goes.
Faces...yeah, it's a bit harder for me to draw them using the tablet (much easier with a pencil), though my unfamiliarity with drawing the characters didn't help early on. I do hope to improve on that one as I go.

As for postures...believe me, even though they're not perfect, the postures ended up looking much better than I thought they would. Overall, I just picture the scene in my head, make a rough sketch/outline of the character in one layer based on that, then start drawing in another. I do sometimes make corrections in the second layer, since the rough sketch doesn't always translate very well into lineart.

Oh yeah I completely forgot how hard it is to draw on a tablet...

The main problem with no dialogue and narration is obviously setting, so... I guess make huge banners when you're introducing people? I dunno...

New drawing, and first complete drawing with shading and lighting. Took a few hours to make:
Why V/V? Because yes.
I may have overdone it with the glow, though...

I take it you put the glow so high so you wouldn't have to draw detail for the wings?
Good Plan :)

My only complaints:
Background seems a little too simplistic

Thinner face? (It's just a personal preference)

And most importantly:

THE HANDS ARE IN THE WAY!!

Duly noted. I still have very little experience with backgrounds, so I did what I could. =_=;
And most importantly: THE HANDS ARE IN THE WAY!!
:P

Once again, I tried my hand at coloring. Since my BG skills are still abysmal, a transparent image will have to suffice.

Don't really know the series, so my comments on the art may be inaccurate

Based on Google images...the only slight problem would be the eyes are a little too close. Moe moe eyes are usually a little further apart, I think

Suggestion: try making backgrounds for some images you've already drawn, to get practice. You work on a pad, so you could just import one of your older pictures without ruining it by accident
Title: Re: The KAIZAverse

I gotta say...not exactly my best. I still need lots of improvement when it comes to shading...
Still, this was done kinda quickly (4 hours vs Levia's 6.5), since I wanna go to sleep... =_=

Your shading's not bad at all. Oh god you're like Revs, Nasho and Tus aren't you, forever complaining about your seeming lack of talent aren't you?

Though the hair...the top part is only a lighter shade if light is shining in from above her...it would make more sense to put the lighter shade on the bangs...

Hmm, well, it's pretty good. The shadow seems a bit too sharp, though (yes, shadows are pretty sharp, but they're not literally just dark in one bit and light in the next (for a start, the sun isn't a point source). Other than that, yeah, what OPOI said. The lighting of her face looks weird, because you seem to have literally just drawn a straight line across it.

Your drawing style is definitely good, though.

If you guys mean the two shade-looking things in both corners, it's because they weren't originally supposed to be shadows. They ended up looking like such and kinda cool, so I left them in. Can't remember what I was going for there, though.
Then again, I was tired at the time (notice I forgot to add lighting).

Thanks for the comments. :)

Well, I've been missing the last two weeks, stuck in a creative slump and a bit depressed due to various circumstances, but thanks to awesome JAM Project music, I finally managed to draw something.
This is the result of...well, a lot of things.
It's actually another idea that got into my head. This time, giant robots. Yeah, giant robots. Don't know what I'll do with this one, but at least, unlike most of the others, I actually managed to write some world-building for this one! (instead of everything being in my head).

This one is actually a quickie I did before the previous one. It's a character from the idea above, named Pandora. Crying because of plot reasons. Speaking of, how do you tears? (Because mine don't look like so)
Title: Re: The KAIZAverse
Post by: Alice on July 28, 2013, 08:28:20 AM
Oh wow, you did a nice job KAIZA. O_O Keep it up! :D

As for the tears... while the tear stream looks tear-like to me (in the anime sense, anyway), if you want more realistic tears, it may not hurt to draw a droplet near the origin of the tear stream, at her bottom eyelid.

It also depends on whether you want to depict it as being a long period of crying, or whether they've just started crying. If they've just started, some droplets on the lower eye lid will do. If they've been crying and are still crying, then you want the droplets along with the tear stream/salt trail. :)

Also, making it a bit  more watery might help as well. :) Add more viscosity and depth to the tear stream.

If ever in doubt, taking a look at a few pictures of people crying both anime style and in real life may help a bit. Hope that helps! :D

Also, welcome back! :D

Very in depth story, you've clearly given a lot of thought to this. It reminds me a lot of neon Genesis...

Art:

The robot seems a little simplistic...reminds me of Eva 01 blended with Gurren lagann
It's probably just personal bias, but I tend to give mobile suits lots of details, go for facial like features.
Fingers don't have joints?

The girl, wow, great job with her; gave me the creeps when I saw her.
As Revs said, tears are fine for the most part, but I think they usually have a tear drop sitting at the corner of the eyes.

And yeah Welcome back Kaiza!

Oh, well. Drawing helps take the pain away.
This time is Polt the Kobold from the latest chapter of Monster Musume no Iru Nichijou!
Decided to use brushes this time instead of the pen for lineart. I don't know, but I find it more comfortable to use even if the lineart is not as good.

Yeah...I dunno what drove me to draw this. But there you go. The lineart I feel is a bit rushed, and I think I need a bit more practice with poses and anatomy. I also need to re-practice shading and such (this one is just base colors), I haven't improved much at that lately.

Post by: Cherry Lover on September 30, 2013, 09:19:44 PM
Hmm, is that meant to be Kotomine?
Title: Re: The KAIZAverse
Post by: KAIZA on October 15, 2013, 05:08:27 AM
Yeah, it's Kotomine. To be honest, I didn't expect anybody to get the reference.
It's Kotomine cosplaying as Great Professor Bias, the main villain from Liveman (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liveman). Why? Because he was played by Jouji Nakata, that's why. (And Gil's cosplaying as Bias' bodyguard Gash, who coincidentally also loses an arm in a sword-fight with the hero in the finale).

So, today started a new semester, with a new career this time! (after a lengthy and painful registration process) Now I'm studying audiovisual design, and I hope I can survive this time, since the whole thing cost me a lot of trouble to do. =_=;
Anyhow, take a guess which show I started watching.
(http://i.imgur.com/jxxLZC4.png) (http://i.imgur.com/37KiIai.png)
No really, guess. I started watching out of curiosity, and frankly? I don't even know how to describe it. It's awesome, it's hilarious; it's the type of show that's so over the top and action-packed, plus the animation...yeah.
I know what I'll be watching this season. (along with the BB anime, since I'm contractually obligated to watch anime based on games I've played)

Anyhow, just the lineart this time, I'll color it once I have the time.
I really need to stop being lazy with the coloring and practice shading and such. I haven't reached that Levia-san level of coloring again...
Title: Re: The KAIZAverse
Post by: KAIZA on October 15, 2013, 07:10:16 AM
Might as well post these old ones too while I'm at it.
These are character sketches for a planned Danganronpa CYOA RP I wanted to make around the time the anime aired, but eventually dropped and moved on. I was reading the DR1 LP while making this, though for DR2 I had only spoilered myself (haven't read the LP yet, wanted to do so after finishing the first one), so the story is probably not 100% accurate.
It was to revolve around a copycat scenario, based on the one from DR1, created by a surviving member of SHSL Despair (a SHSL Hacker) with 16 students trapped in a facility and such and such. There was a crocodile plushie acting as the game's Monobear, a computer avatar of the mastermind giving orders to the plushie, and stuff.

What a twist, the protag's best friend during the game (a hacker who helped him solve each case) turns out to be the mastermind, what a surprise. And he dies near the endgame. What a shock. And yet, is still running the game. It's confusing, it was to involve "splitting his mind" into three different personas (the plushie, the mastermind, the friend) and all part of the plan. Keikaku doori desu and such.

Oh, and Monobear and Junko would have made an appearance by the end, taking over the game. It all involved a virtual reality. And the mastermind's plan was to use the simulation and a copy AI to "re-create Junko", of which the Protag was to be a clone/host/something, never planned that far ahead. The guy was supposed to be obsessed or something, and the protag was supposed to show hints of Junko's personality or something. Yeah, I don't know what I was smoking either.

Character List

Actor -  Mafuyu Narita
Wrestler - Maximum Kamen
Poet - Nobuo Edogawa

Archer - Ran Akamatsu
Journalist - Touko Amada
Inventor - Kimiko Mikimoto
Host - Hikaru Fudou
Track Runner - Yoshino Arakawa

I planned a bit of the story, like some of the murders and part of the endgame, but I never actually did much with the idea. I did manage to draw 8 of the 18 characters, so there's that. And since I'm not gonna use them, here they are, in all their lazy sketchy, uncolored monochrome glory.

They're pretty good sketches KAIZA, though I think some of the designs are a bit...stereotypical? I dunno, it's just that I feel like I've seen those designs somewhere before.

As for the scenario...it's not bad, just lacking details. A lot of details.

For that picture below, it's a good picture, but based on the pictures of kill la kill I literally just looked at, the girl's face is too angular, and there shouldn't be triangles in her hair. Her hair's also a bit wilder than usual, but eh whatevs. Anyway, keep up the good work!

Yeah...no weapons. I mostly focused on the poses and having the four of them there. ^^;

Well, I'm finally done with college for now. Now I just need to actually focus on doing something productive (like a fic or that FE comic, or maybe just actual drawings)
For now, I only have small sketches. I'll try doing them daily or so, and posting them as soon as I remember to do so. If I'm lucky, I could even finish drawing something instead of just doing sketches.

These are just sketches of characters for an old game idea I had from last year. And a drawing/concept of the final boss fight. I think that's the word for it.

This one...I dunno, I just started sketching and ended up with this. I call him "The Doctor", because I got nothing else at the moment. Originality? Creativity? Realistic arm posing? What's that?

And this one is a WIP I started last week. I need to get back to it at some point and finish it.
I also need to be a bit less lazy about coloring. I need to get my coloring groove back.  ( -_-)

After I finish this one (needs Star Platinum), I'll move on to stuff I owe people.

I need to improve on the hand-drawn lineart->digital coloring process. Mostly on getting a clean lineart, which I keep failing constantly.

Thanks. :3

Anyhow, I finally turned in my last art project for class and got it graded. And I got to keep it with me this time...

(btw, the teacher just took images from deviantArt, in my case this image (http://artgerm.deviantart.com/art/Pepper-Swing-337979765), and told us to paint them in oil)

With this, the semester's finally over. Now I just need to wait for my final scores. And then next semester starts in two weeks. orz
Well, at least I'll get some rest til then.

That's actually really good. You should get good marks for that, I hope.

22/30, actually; which is not bad, but is not exactly stellar, and I still don't know the rest of my score, so...

Anyways, here's a little WIP I started last night, trying to practice more on posing and such by using some reference pictures and stuff. Will try to work on it today as well, if I don't end up distracted by games.

OK, got some work done on the lineart; all that's left is maybe the background.
After that, I'll work on the coloring (and the tail I worry the most; I'm not exactly an expert on fur)

Well, I probably won't be done with this one for a while. Decided to try some more pose practice using some reference pictures; this time trying a bit more "actiony" one. Not sure if the reference I used is "actiony" enough (since I suck at finding good references), but it's worth practicing at least.

So, I have to start working on my final project for Photoshop class. We were given a choice between one of three assignments: Graphic Design, Digital Illustration, and Photo Illustration. And since I'm horribly overconfident on my skills, I chose Digital Illustration. So, I have to take this:

(Image not to actual scale)
And paint over it until it looks pretty. Without SAI; Photoshop only. I mean, it's a good skill to have. And a challenge. We'll see how this turns out eventually.

So...remember how I said the above^ was gonna be my class project? Well, complications arose because I suck at doing clean scanned lineart, and thus I decided to re-do it in Photoshop. That said, I wanted some practice first, because Photoshop. One thing led to the other, and, well...

I guess I'll be doing a different character for my class project.

Well, I've worked on it as much as I could, tried adding all the corrections the teacher asked...and she's still not satisfied with it. Frankly, I'm out of ideas for this one. I could ask for feedback here, but unfortunately, I can't post the full-sized version (CMYK and A3, way too big for imgur) for better feedback. Alas, I guess this will be the final version:

So I'm finally out of college, and must now endure the horrible process of job-hunting. Again.
In the meantime, did I ever tell you I joined Smogon? Well, if I didn't, I joined Smogon. And I've done a few arts for them, though for now, I'll post these two banner arts I made, because my thread dying and dropping from its position makes me sad.

I need to draw more.

It's me again! Boy, has it been a while. IRL stuff, plus artist block and other issues aside, it's good to finally update with content, even if some of it is very old. =w=
Let's start with some old Smogon art I haven't posted here.

Now for something a bit more recent, there's some doodles I made a couple days ago, as well as my design for Smogon's Create-A-Pokemon 20 (made it 16/31...that's gotta count for something, right?).

And finally, something I tried drawing last night. I wanted to try something videogame-y, so I went to listen to some game music, namely Puyo Puyo (no idea why), and started drawing to see what came out. This is the result.

Yeah, it's been quite a while since I've done anything. However, I did take on the Inktober challenge this month. Pretty fun, even if I had to catch up quickly due to me discovering it late.
Now, here be all my sketches, compiled into on single image for ease of view. Enjoy their varying quality and amateurish inking:

So! This semester, I joined my college’s illustration club. As such,  nowadays I tend to sketch and practice stuff a bit more often. Few of it  is noteworthy, though. ^^;

Still, I thought these were good  enough to show. Just practicing traditional coloring, inking and a  somewhat different artstyle. Though, the digital sketch is probably  going to be a WIP, since I do hope to use it to practice digital  painting. Who knows. ^^;

Edit: Kinda forgot to add one last sketch. Fixed now! ^^;

Well, it's been a while since I've done an update. ^^;
Admittedly, while I've done the occasional sketch and such, I haven't finished any major art projects. It doesn't help I've found myself in a bit of a block lately. Although I do have an FGO-related thing in the works, I thought I might as well post some of these practice sketches I did a few weeks ago.

They are all based on photos I found around online, and with the exception of the last one and sorta the third one, I tried replicating the pose and clothes as much as possible. Yes, eye-referencing, I know; I take no credit for these other than practice.

First picture is directly based on the photo, but for the others, I tried using a random character for each, while still adapting the pose and clothing. The third one I obviously changed the outfit to the character's, while the last one is more original, since I only based the outfit on the picture, but the pose is new.
