Anastasia

The moment when Anastasia noticed someone around Medaka while she was blown away by the wind she indirectly created, she realized that another third party joined the fray. She couldn't exactly make out what was happening, only noticed a presence of another person. Thinking again on her feet, she looked for a place where she could crash land relatively safely while protected by that spell. She set off another, weaker version of the spell she used to propel herself to begin with in order to deaccelerate. She made a quick calculation and chose crashing on the top of a large tree as slow as she could feasibly manage.

Ouch.

A broken rib and a bruised body were a small price for being able to crash relatively close to the battlefield. In fact, it was quite an optimal hideout for observing the battle and hopefully intervening. She grimaced from the pain of the crash, but recomposed herself thanks to the adrenaline. There was no time for succumbing to pain during such intense events. She had to focus and do her best to track the battle even if most of the movements of those people were impossible to precisely track.

If there was any chance she could actually help, then she would seize it in a heartbeat.

Honestly, it was Anastasia who should have been disappointed, but it's not like she had high expectations to begin with. This man just kept proving he was nothing but self-absorbed trash consorting with infernal powers. Powerful trash, to their dismay, but still a trash. Medaka was now in a dire predicament and the wizard probably would die before assisting in any meaningful way, probably dragging her chances to the bottom in the process, so she had to make the hard choice. A tactical retreat. Thanks to the fact that she both protected herself with that spell and accumulated enough energy, she could devise another risky escape plan.

She could propel herself away with the icestorm carrying away her body in a gust of violent wind, hopefully her shield and control over the magic cushioning the worst of the damage she could suffer. And hopefully close enough the cavalry assuming that women didn't wander away, actually survived or was willing to help anyway. But still, anything was worth the shot.

So thinking on feet, she conjured a strong gust of wind through a very localized icestorm, bracing herself for the impact and propelling herself away. She'd spend the rest of the energy to cushion her impact to mitigate any potential too serious damage to her body.

Anastasia finished her preparations in case Vanguard wanted to strike her down. With the magical armor spell she shouldn't die immediately from an attack that would deal her a fatal injury and could be able to counterattack in one final stand. But still, there was one thing she could do. Try to use her ability to speak to try to buy time. She wasn't trained for this, but still, for sake of Medaka she'd give it a shot.

"She said that she has been on the losing side against you since the beginning. You could have finished her back then and can finish her off, but you still keep coming back to fight her. I'm partly responsible for her newly gained powers. Give our team extra time and you might see more progress." She ignored the man's ramble about saving billions and just gave her little speech. The humanity didn't need a savior. If they couldn't overcome threats through organized and joint effort without relying on a single entity, then maybe they weren't worth saving.

Her talk wasn't pleading. It was a calculated offer as Anastasia was also resigned to the possibility that she could die here and now. Hence she went through the effort to set up a potential trap even if it required a final sacrifice. But she was honestly moved by Medaka's care for her as a comrade, so an attempt at diplomacy first before more drastic actions, for her sake.

Her gambit kind of worked out, but the difference in their might was still self-evident. The woman who aided them was hurled back by his blow. Well, she might have been killed by that blow, but Anastasia focused on the now rather than the fate of someone who wanted to settle some score too. She just didn't know that woman any longer than she popped out of her shadow, so she didn't spare a milisecond for mourning her. Instead she focus on the situation at hand. They were back again to the previous situation, with the difference that the man tried to mentally break down Medaka with words. Him calling her out for her selfishness? What a farce.

"You're condemning her for her selfishness, as if you were the selfless one. Don't make me laugh, everyone's selfish in the world on some level, as long as they pick a goal. Medaka's here to fulfill her goal, I chose to stand by her and you even proactively chose to thwart us first." No matter what Medaka decided to do, they had to fight him anyway, so she put emphasis on that last word.

Of course as she began her short speech she already started preparing a spell. If he rushed at her, as long as he didn't kill her outright, she'd probably set off enough energy to blow up without care for collateral damage and making her death not senseless. But if she managed to find right timing, she'd just use the spell in more outward fashion. She already got over the possibility of dying here, and she focused on just doing as much as she could.

Frankly she didn't expect such turn of events. Who? Why? How? Who was even this woman who erupted from her shadow of all things? But she knew one thing: anyone aiding her ally and not opposing her would be an ally. So she turned out her questions quickly and focused at the matter at hand. Quick calculation: getting away would take up time, she was standing close enough not too shabby leyline, but more importantly, they were fighting on streets, and there was likely a pipeline pumping water beneath them. She knew what to do.

Her spell didn't focus on Vanguard or the creature above, at least not directly. She would partly freeze water already flowing through pipelines to make them crack, make water erupt from places, taking care to not affect the mysterious woman and Medaka. A second stage spell would freeze the now more abundant water in the air and hurl it against the creature. She hoped that Medaka would get the hint and use her magic to help her take down the creature by letting the spikes reach it faster.

He better would not underestimate her! She knew that he couldn't exactly fly, and she had mobility even if restrained. All she needed to cast her magic was her soul. The fact that Vanguard slowed down actually gave her just barely enough time to set up a spell, and lanch herself into air with another pillar of ice knocking her upwards to widen the distance. The ice wizard coughed up some blood from the blunt trauma, but injury was a small price to pay for buying Medaka more time and giving herself more distance to work with. In the end, this battle weighed on how well they were able to stall him until they got more favorable conditions.

As the wizard was knocked back by Medaka out of the way of the axe, her discipline allowed her to recover from the shock of the surprise attack and allowed her to act. She made a split-second decision to tactically retreat out of the way of the demonic creature's attack rather than cast a spell to potentially erect a shield to block it off, and propelled herself further by knocking herself back with her own magic and planning to slow down her crash. It wasn't painless, but it was necessary to gain some distance. After all, she trusted in Medaka's speed and powers to not being caught up with the blast while staying too close would just make Anastasia a liability for the vampire. If she acts in a support role as she envisioned it, they might stand a proper chance. As long as the damned woman didn't show up again to meddle.

"Don't consider yourself expendable. I'll retreat, but not without covering your retreat too. I don't want to hear any ifs and buts." She said sternly, as if giving an order. She didn't plan to lose any other comrade against this man, so she'd even drag her body away if she had to. Retreat was something preferable to Medaka expending her own life for this.

(this happens, as I discussed with Franco, before Vanguard says his line sorry for any confusion in advance)

As Medaka continued to describe the person they were looking for the wizard realized that she had faced this man before. She clenched her fists as the vampire talked about him and just when she was about to speak up, the same sensation befell on her, sending down shiver down her spine. And yet, she felt some meagre hope too. The demon that proved to be some troublesome was not around this time. So maybe they had a shot since last time she fought she remembered wounding the warrior.

"We might have a shot. But the moment someone sides with him, retreat. He's not someone we can deal with if he has support."

Anastasia

"If you have to play dead, then I don't see that it'd be easy for me to get out either. Can we take at least one more ally for this? I don't want to doubt in your abilities, but you said yourself that you've been on the losing side so far against him." She didn't want to act like some kind of doomsayer, but if Medaka kept losing to the guy, then they had to treat him as one of most grave threats they have faced before. "Can you at least say how he looks like?"

11
Anastasia

"Your scouting plan might or might not be a good idea depending on how good are your opponent's sense. Could you see him from afar without getting noticed by him?" An element of surprise probably would be important here. They couldn't let their enemy hold the initiative.

Anastasia

"You're heading towards that large building?" Anastasia pointed at the Colosseum that dwarfed buildings around them. "If he's there, then I'd advise against just heading there. I have not progressed much in 3 months, so I'm hardly a warranty. And we need a plan."

Someone had to remind her. Last time Anastasia improvised it turned out into a disaster after all. So  she had to be the cooling influence and make her slow down a bit, so to speak.

13
Anastasia

"Heading out at once, huh? You're paradoxicallly in a bit of hurry for someone who really needs a plan. But I guess you're in that hurry to get to the proper planning stage. If our enemy doesn't plan to attack us first or leave somewhere, then we have all the time we need to formulate the offensive and gather allies." Every time a loss, huh? That fact could be factored in as well. "I actually think the fact that you keeping losing fights against him will work in your advantage. He might be prone to underestimate you, and you could potentially hit him hard when he expects it the least."

But speaking of hitting hard. "As I said before, you've progressed a lot? I trust that you have an ace in sleeve against him compared to your previous fights? You can reveal it somewhere else to me."

The mage stood up and was ready to head out somewhere else where they could talk in more detail about the strategy.

When she heard those news, Anastasia wordlessly lowered her head. Yes, it was beyond serious. She knew deep in heart that they would eventually find him, but still those news were heavy. After a pause, she looked again in Medaka's eyes and asked: "You want to take what you have lost, right?"

It was a rhetorical question for she expected what kind of answer she would give?

Anastasia

„Something to discuss? Go ahead, if it's some bad news or a very serious matter, than we should get to that first.” Anastasia replied. Medaka did look a bit distressed, so that was probably something that should be a priority. She wasn't like that too often, so if she looked troubled, then usually it was for a good reason.
