Edelgard

Edelgard flexed her grip on the weapon to which she owed her life many times and rang the contraption that signaled her arrival. As she stared at the door, trying to not strain her eyesight over the traces of spellery she sensed beyond, she couldn't help but think the surroundings were simple and clean, and the whole building seemed to partake of an atmosphere of naive security.

The Forsaken warrior didn't think she fit in here, or in this sprawling urbanization of learning populated by hopeful younglings. Even with their moods hampered by some unseen event she had not seen but could smell the trails of in a section of closed-off streets, their world was entirely different from hers. It had been too long since she had been exposed to that simple joy, and her environment had not been anything like this. The animated plazas and rising centers of knowledge more brought to mind the city of Elewein at the time before bringing armies to its walls. Perhaps it was a mercy then, that others did not feel likewise about her. She drew eyes, but none appeared to scrutinize her for lack of belonging.

Sakura had convinced her to make more use of her "street clothes", since they had gone through such work as to acquire them, and heading to a new district was a perfect to do so, albeit she was here for work. Some vestiges of Edelgard's pride protested discarding her traditional vests for this function, but they lost their purchase when she gave herself a moment to reflect. The prestige the largely unprotective clothes of a devil lancer afforded her meant nothing in the Nexus, and Edelgard did not think she was worthy of the dignity they represented even if they did. She had not done enough to redeem herself, a quiet fragment of her heart echoed.

So here she was, answering this commission she had picked up not too long ago from her sojourns in the outer levels of the Citadel, in perfectly casual dress. Resilient "sneakers", slim black pants, a form-fitting silver and blue-lined top, and the white patterned jacket that half-slipped from her shoulders. And a giant polearms slung behind her.

"Blessed song!"

Folainluc straightened up like a flexed harp string plinking back to place, and a nostalgic bashfulness dusted his cheeks red as he looked up in loud exclamation. His eyes widened, then squinted, and the awe in them spilled easily from his mouth in a moment of understanding. "A sapient, enchanted weapon, with its own bodily avatar? Do I understand this right? That is wondrous! It had never crossed my mind I would ever meet one, much less that such ah, beings, could be found outside of Endien!"

Another revelation appeared to dawn on Folainluc by his own words, because he caught himself hiding the lower half of his mouth with his hand. His brows wiggled in wily curiosity, eyes drawn off to the side.

"I always found you were much too taken with making things," he said. "No wonder."

He averted his eyes of course, and concerned himself with setting the princess's favorites on a plate. "I don't know what you could mean, my lady," he answered, offering a wry smile. But when it came to the other woman's words, his brows climbed subtly up his forehead as towards a foreign curiosity. "Pardon me, but wielder? Might this be some parlance from your home for a warrior of renown sworn or aligned with a particular personage? You do match the part, speaking as a hero like it were a simple thing, standing here in the confidence of Princess Lirazel."

Folain's gaze drifted between Lirazel and Thorra.

His hurried footsteps came back into earshot of the princess and her companion with timely aplomb. Elfglass and fine porcelain clattered as he emerged from the last stretch of the rise, but not one thing spilled or fell off in the hasty manuevers. And no sooner had he made the last of the stairs, did Folainluc raise higher the silver tray he brought and unfolded wheeled legs from under it, setting it on the floor so he could simply push it. The wheels made no sound as the set of delicacies and refreshments was brought to them, but the knight had to pause when it came the time to look upon them, and smiled with due consideration a second later.

"Here we are, my ladies!" He said, bringing the tray to a halt. A colorful grouping of desirable snacks stood out for them, such as delicate, sugar-sprinkled treats like flower petals, grape-sized fruits by a bowl of fluffy cream, flat, caramel-colored biscuits, tea of a blend exclusive to making of the Houses of Endien, and a honeyed, refreshing nectar drink in a crystalline container.

Not willing to stop there, he pulled chairs along for each of them before beginning the conversation proper as he inquired with his eyes how to begin plating their choices. "So, Miss Thorra, I am given to understand you played a rather flashy part on the walls! Before anything else, though I'm certain the princess has already impressed upon you the significance of your deeds, please, accept my thanks in looking out for our soldiers. Any one life your contribution saved means more than I can express."

He managed with no small effort to not gawk as he addressed her.

She looked at him not as if he'd ripped his own hand off to partially free himself of restraints, but like he'd spilled hot coffee all over it, or anything of similar import and resulting mess. And shook her head, as she was disapproving of a boyish display of excess, rather than holding back cold sweat from the gruesome pointlessness of the display by sheer will.

"We'll shake once we have the contract secured, not before," she said. Her eyes gave the bloody stump an unimpressed appraisal. "And with a clean hand, not a messy stump."

The headmaster leaned back in her seat then, and began to make the arrangements through her mental messages.

Making his way down, past when he could no longer hear the muffled voices of the two, the hopping vitality in Folainluc's steps died down quietly. He looked forward as he went and held his jaw in thought. Playing it off with his usual temperament or not, the knight could not imagine what manner of woman, charming and impressive in figure as she was, could have commanded this intimacy from princess Lirazel so quickly. He was truly curious... curious and worried. From the brief report he listened to, it wasn't just one stranger who had aided their numbers at the walls, rather two companions, and the other was of a rather unique mien as well, but did not seem to be anywhere he could find right now.

Ah, but he shouldn't jump to conclusions, that was unsavory. "I will go prepare some beverages and treats so we can have a good, long discussion in the common room," he said, eyebrows curling contently, and followed with a chuckle. "Hopefully, they will be presentable by the time I come back."

A single helpless little laugh escaped from her throat at his concern.

"You don't have to worry about that," she responded. Shaking her head, the magician smoothed out the creases around her eyes and the edges of her mouth back to a passably neutral look. "I wouldn't expect subtlety from you. Only that you will hunt them down. If you agree, I will have these terms engraved with magic upon the two of us."

If one could hear the workings of the knight's mind, then the speeding gears that were turning inside would likely compel most people to cover their ears. He still blocked for himself the sight of the pair, but they saw his mouth stretch into a knowing smile in spite of the awe that occupied him.

"I jest, I jest!" Folainluc said, waving his other hand apologetically. "But it's a serious committment then. Now I really must hear everything! I had given for lost that my lady would ever entangle herself so deeply with anyone until her awaited hero arrived, but fate seems to be smiling today. Ah, I should leave you to compose yourselves, excuse me!"

He started walking backwards to the outside of the forge with a spring to his step.

The surprise was written plain on his face, stripping his aquiline nose and sharp cheekbones of the bright severity that tinted his youthful handsomeness until one heard him speak loud in fondness. How could anyone not be utterly disarmed of their composure, having carelessly stepped in to a moment exposing not one, but two transcendent beauties? That was not precisely the reason for his shock, but rapidly as that instant threatened to stretch to a brief eternity, his mouth parted in flustered astonishment.

"Goodness! Pray forgive my indiscretion! This is QUITE the surprise!" He shouted, shielding his eyes with a forearm while twisting his body away. But the princess would notice then, a familiar inflection slip into the last of his words, a dreadful ease slightly appear in that posture that had been genuinely caught off-guard. Folainluc continued.

"I must say, when I was preparing myself to admonish you for disappearing into your workshop, giving nary a warning before occupying yourself with gods-know-what for hours when you had a guest - I did not expect in truth that you were entertaining her in such a fashion!" His light laughs gave away his sincerity. "My greetings to you! I am Folainluc, steward of Endien and most staunch ally of our dear princess!"

She curled her fingers into her palms, resting loose fists on the table. The words took their time to come, not because they were difficult to say, but because of the concession they were.

"Track down the ones who decided to count the days to our demise," the Headmaster said. "Pursue them, and capture, that their plans might be exposed. And, should you deem it, in good faith, that they cannot be reasoned with, that they will consume yet others without the possibility of stopping, or that restraining them is impossible - eliminate them, if you can. This is what I would have you do, with my clemency and your duties recorded in a mutually binding oath."

Hurried and weighty feet found their way through the graceful halls of the palace as the rays of the sun began to bend sharply through the windows, tilting towards a lovely orange of a midwinter hearth. It was enough to raise the spirits of even one who had seen it ten thousand times before, but the soldier who ran up the innards of the tower did not require a balm for the mood. Each step was alight, not with trepidation, but curiosity, excitement, and at worst a mild anxiety for answers.

He only got faster as he passed by less people on the way up, as he did not quite have to slow his step to greet them as he deserved. So it took no time at all for him to arrive at his most respectable lady's sanctum, striding right in with his arms spread wide.

"My lady!" He called, loud with cheer and unexpectant of what he was to find. "I heard you were at the walls unattended, and that you had the pleasure of meeting a most fascinating stranger! I came straight here to be appraised of the tale by your own words!"

She stared into his lightless pits without taking a breath, and bent her fingers. The floor and pillars rattled, and the chains jerked back at once, slamming Costin back into his seat. The feet of the chair grinded noisily against the tiles before they froze to her will.

"Don't presume to know me," she said, heavy to the ear with judgement. No scorned lover, but a rightfully jilted stranger, that was how she responded to his excitement. But giving no heed to the passing mood, the Headmaster freed a shallow exhale and slouched but a sliver on her own chair. "I don't like killing, though some souls would be better off buried. If you think that's strange... well, I'm not here to argue lifestyles. This idea is to my benefit. To extract what reparations are possible, if you care about such a thing, and to pacify my conscience. But it is also to your benefit."

The enchanter's face tightened with practiced mirth.

"Let me avoid assumptions by asking, this time. Are you ready to hear a proposal?"

"Fortunate are those with the privilege to choose when and how they will die," she said. The Headmaster did not stand up, but her voice resounded as if she had taken a lone stand at a podium. Or perhaps as if speaking into the chasm that was Costin. "Convince me to not take that possibility away from you."

She seemed to ponder this, and pushed the near-emptied, cooled mug she had brought with her to the edge of the table, grinding with a low sound against the wood. If her face was made of stone before, now a minute crack shifted around her mouth.

"Do you want to die?" She asked in turn.

"I see that an unceasing requiem of no-matter-how-many years does not dull glibness," she said. The Headmaster's lidded gaze brushed over his expression as an afterthought. "If that's all, then I better see us rid of you. Time bombs with a sense of humor sound like terrible allies."
